More than 20 Olympic medallists, mentors and further international athletes have endorsed a appeal calling for a halt to the execution of a boxing titleholder and coach, who is facing execution in the country.

Escalating Global Anger

Amidst increasing worldwide anger over Iran’s escalating use of capital punishment as a tool of suppression, the forcefully phrased appeal condemns the Iranian regime's ruling to maintain the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from Mashhad in the northeastern region, was taken into custody for taking part in nationwide protests in two thousand nineteen and charged of backing an dissident organization. He has passed half a decade in prison, where he has been tortured and confined in seclusion.

“Athletics is intended to inspire faith, solidarity, and fortitude,” the signatories wrote. “The execution of a champion for his opinions is a clear violation on these principles and a caution to every athlete who attempts to speak out.

Pattern of Putting to Death Sports Figures

The statement noted that the boxer's case was not an isolated one and underscored the country's history of sentencing to death athletes for their convictions, such as Habib Khabiri, leader of the soccer squad, and a volleyball captain, captain of the female volleyball side. In the year 2020, an athlete, a 27-year national competitor, faced the death penalty.

Additional signatories to the letter include Tracy Edwards, who led the pioneering all-female crew in a global yacht race and was the first woman to earn a prestigious nautical honor; the ex- skipper of the soccer side Craig Foster; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the country's selection for the international competition.

Detention and Unfair Trial

Vafaei Sani was detained in March 2020. The charges against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through arson and ruin of public property”. His sentence has been overturned multiple times but on 4 October it was maintained on the third attempt. His trial was criticized as “grossly unfair” by rights defenders and bodies.

Urging to United Nations

The call to prevent the boxer's execution is subsequent to a 2023 letter to the United Nations official for human rights, backed by more than 100 rights specialists and entities, urging measures to prevent the athlete’s execution.

Execution Crisis

Based on reports, there is an “capital punishment escalation in the country, which has reached shocking dimensions”. In the year 2023, authorities executed at least over 850 people – a forty-eight percent surge on 2022. In the prior period, data showed nearly a thousand executions, marking the highest number since two thousand fifteen. Over eight hundred people have been executed so far in 2025.
