New research reveals that people who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these medications must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Experts propose the way of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
